After three attempts, it finally worked out that all three riders of the EGS-alpha-Van Zon-BMW team had their BMW S 1000 RR, with which they are going to competed this year at the IDM, International German Championship, together at the Hockenheimring last weekend. The German champion of 2019, Ilya Mikhalchik and his new teammate Vladimir Leonov led the timesheets consistently. A lot of settings and components of the motorcycle, as well as tire tests were carried out in order to be perfectly prepared for the upcoming IDM season 2020. The team as a whole worked great and Werner Daemen, the team manager, is also satisfied with the performance of his crew.
Tim Eby, who completed his first year at IDM last year inside the EGS-Moto-Racing team, was also able to keep up with his two teammates and find his rhythm. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old was injured in a crash in the „Sachskurve“ corner of the circuit and had to be taken to the hospital. The crash itself was not too bad, the motorcycle remained largely intact, but Eby got stuck with his hand under the handlebar and pinched the little finger of his left hand between the handlebar and the asphalt. The finger had to be treated surgically in the hospital. We wish Tim a good and quick recovery and hope that he will be fit again for the first race of the championship on the TT Circuit in Assen, Netherlands – from August 14th to 16th.
“The two test days went very well and Ilya and Vladimir were very fast. They are on the same level. The whole team worked very well together. Tim did a really good job too. When he was trying out different front tires, it came to a crash, in which he unfortunately injured his finger. Such falls can happen, you can not do anything. I hope that he will soon be able to get back on his feet and be part of the first race in three weeks. ”
Ilya Mikhalchik # 1:
“I’m really happy with how the test at the Hockenheimring went. It was the first time that we worked as a whole IDM team and it looks like we’re ready for the season. All three riders were really fast. I get on very well with my teammates and that is very important to me personally. I think we have a good chance to have more bikes on the podium again this year. I am now looking forward to the first race of the season and will try to fight for the championship again. ”
Tim Eby # 17:
“I tested different front tires and in the „Sachskurve“ I braked a little too much and was too inclined when the front wheel slipped away. This is not a spectacular crash in itself, but I pinched my left hand between the handlebars and asphalt and that was a problem. My little finger got so badly injured that they had to take half of it off in the hospital. It’s not that bad, I just hope that I’ll be fit again by the start of the season. ”
Vladimir Leonov # 65:
“It was a really good test. Of course, the bike and the team are all new to me and I had to find my place first. The first day was accordingly tough, but the second day was really very good. I set constant lap times despite the asphalt on the track, which is very different from the asphalt that I am used to from other tracks, for example in Spain. But I understand the motorcycle much better after these two days. We tried different set ups and I was able to build a good feeling with the bike. I feel comfortable in the team and everyone works very professional. I’m just a little upset that these two test days are over already. I would like to have tried a little more, but still I think that we are perfectly prepared. ”
