EGS-alpha-Van Zon-BMW Team tests in Spain
You can already smell the motorsport season 2021. There are only a few weeks left before the new season of the International German Motorcycle Championship starts at the Lausitzring in Germany. The corona pandemic still has the world firmly under control, but the world is still turning and so the four riders of the EGS-alpha-Van Zon-BMW team, with Ilya Mikhalchik (UKR), Tim Eby (GER), Pepijn Bijsterbosch (NED) and Jan Mohr (AUT), have used the last few days and tested their new motorcycles on the international racetracks that are the Motorland Aragón and the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia in Spain.
With a reduced team and only the most necessary helping hands, the crew of team boss Werner Daemen traveled to Spain to get as many kilometers as possible underway and to get the bikes and riders used to each other. In addition to the BMW S 1000 RR, the newly developed BMW M 1000 RR has also been used. The first kilometers on the new motorcycle quickly showed that BMW has done a great job again. The glance in the riders’ eyes confirmed this too. The response from both tests shows that the team is very satisfied with the set-up of the machines. Another test is to take place in Most, Czech Republic, at the end of April. However, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the country due to COVID-19 and whether the two-day test is even possible.
The 2021 IDM season officially begins on April 30th at the Lausitzring in Germany. A total of nine events are planned for this season under strict hygiene requirements. Again we need to thank the organizers of the championship from Motorpress Stuttgart, who hold on to the championship even under these difficult conditions and thus enable the teams and riders of the IDM championship to have a future.
Read here what our four riders and team manager Werner Daemen have to say about the two welcome changes in Spain:
Jan Mohr, # 5:
“The test in Valencia was very positive. I already felt clear progress in Aragón. We were able to adjust the bike to me in terms of the chassis and the electronics and I found my way. We have also made a lot of progress in the general set-up. Especially on the last day of the test, the bike was much more agile and I was more relaxed about my lap times. Even with used tyres, we were able to improve our time and I’m very happy about that. Those were two very intense tests. I did a lot of laps to optimally adapt to the bike. Of course we still have a lot of work ahead of us, but I’m confident that the season opener will be successful. I feel very comfortable in the new team. Everyone works very professional and the team atmosphere is excellent. I hope that we can still complete a successful test and have clearly set myself the goal of achieving podium places right from the start.„
Tim Eby, # 17:
“The new BMW S 1000 RR that I rode is right at a really high level and I was able to pick up where I left off last year. Everything worked very well. Of course, the team was much smaller than normal due to the current corona restrictions. There were only a few mechanics on site and we didn’t have all of the motorcycles with us. But that didn’t stop me from quickly finding my rhythm again. We riders also got on really well with each other. Overall, I worked less on the lap times than on the feeling with the bike and I’m very happy with what we achieved in the two tests. Now I will try to ride as much as possible until the start of the season in private sessions and also get a little fitter in order to be optimally prepared for the new season.„
Ilya Mikhalchik, # 37:
“I am really very happy with the first test. I had six full days on my new bike, the BMW M 1000 RR. The winter was quite long and it was a great feeling to be on the bike again. I’m very happy with my lap times, especially with the race pace. We actually worked on it all days. I really like the new bike. Of course not everything is 100% set yet, but I’m already looking forward to the first race with it. I will try to be at the forefront again and enjoy the new season on my new motorcycle. As always, it is clearly very important for me this year as every year that I have fun with what I do on track and I have no doubts about that.„
Pepijn Bijsterbosch, # 55:
“It was good to be back on the bike. The break was very long, so I was all the more pleased that we had the opportunity to test in Spain. The bike ran really well and we used the entire test time to work on the settings. I am very satisfied with the progress that we have made. The work in the team was also very good and very professional and I’m looking forward to the season with the new team. I actually can’t wait to be back on my motorcycle very soon again. As far as I am concerned, the season can start now.„
Werner Daemen, Team Manager:
“I am very happy with the way the two tests in Aragón and Valencia went. The team worked very well on the set-up of the BMW M 1000 RR and made good progress. All four riders performed well. Tim rode the S 1000 RR and was really good in Valencia. His lap times were in the 1,38s. Jan has also integrated very well into the new team, I am very satisfied with his work. Pepijn was also very fast in Valencia and he likes the new M a lot, that was clearly visible. In Aragón Ilya was on the track in the 1’52 times and in Valencia he was very fast with 1’34. I liked that. I am very confident that we will be doing very well again at the Lausitzring’s season opener in a month’s time.”
