The new season of the International German Motorcycle Championship 2021 will start in just three months time at the Lausitzring in Germany and the EGS-alpha-Van Zon-BMW Team will participate with four top-class riders this year.

The two-time German champion Ilya Mikhalchik (2018, 2019, UKR) and Tim Eby (GER), who was part of the team last year, get support from Pepijn Bijsterbosch (NED), who is returning to his old team after a few years and Jan Mohr (AUT). Mohr, who competed in the SBK1000 class in 2020 with the HESS Racing team on a Yamaha, will contest his first season in the EGS-alpha-Van Zon-BMW team in 2021 and is highly motivated. The 22-year-old, who did his first kilometers on asphalt in 2012, originally comes from the motocross sector, but has already gained experience with the BMW S 1000 RR in recent years, so he is not a newcomer to the fast BMW.

For Mikhalchik, the new season could be an opportunity to regain the IDM title and that is also the clear goal of the 25-year-old Ukrainian. He has been training meticulously towards this goal for several months. He takes the experience he has gained through Jonas Folger, the IDM champion of 2020 with him into his preparations and is confident that he will achieve his goal of bringing the title back to the team of motorcycle icon Werner Daemen in 2021.

Eby hopes for more luck for this new season. In 2020 he didn’t have much time to ride after injuring his hand in the preseason test at the Hockenheimring and then unfortunately had to sit out the first event of the season, which was shortened to four events in total already. During the other three stops of the season, the 27-year-old from Blumberg was able to continuously improve and his goal is to continue this trend positively in 2021.

For Bijsterbosch it is a “return home”, as he took the first steps in the IDM Superbike 1000 class in 2015 and 2016 with Daemen’s BMW team. In 2019 he finished the season in third place, which is his best overall result in the class to date. The Dutchman has a lot of experience on the BMW S 1000 RR and is determined to at least repeat his result from 2019.

An exciting season with a lot of expertise awaits the EGS-alpha-Van Zon-BMW team at the start of the SBK1000 class. We look forward to exciting races and to finally getting started again.

VOICES:

Ilya Mikhalchik #37:
I’m really looking forward to the new season. Obviously I’m hungry after finishing second last year. I didn’t like losing the title – which I held two years earlier – to Jonas (Folger), even though I really enjoyed fighting with him. I learned a lot and will try to take that with me this year. I’m looking forward to the many new riders in the class, but also to the old ones, and hope that I can fight for the title again this year. That is my clear goal. For this I have trained very hard in the last few weeks, because the level in the IDM has risen a lot, which I think is great. I can’t wait for the new season to finally start.

Tim Eby #17:
Of course my expectations are higher for this new season than they were last year and I hope that I can improve again. But I don’t want to promise too much either. My goal is to go a bit faster on every track than I did last year while I will try to avoid to crash and try to stay injury-free. I’m looking forward to the new teammates Jan and Pepijn and the teamwork with them and Ilya. I trained hard the whole off-season and prepared myself as best as I could for the new season. I’m just looking forward to a great time and working with my team at IDM.

Pepijn Bijsterbosch #55:
I am very happy to be able to return to Werner’s team after all these years. We have always worked very well together. Being part of the old team again makes me very happy. The material we get from BMW is very, very good and that’s an extra motivation for me. I would like to be in the top three of the championship again this year and I will give everything for that!

Jan Mohr #5:
First of all, I would like to thank Werner, Robert (Eby) and the whole team for letting me start with them. It’s just the best team in the championship and you can see that if you look at the team’s stats over the past ten years and they’ve been amazing. So now I have no more excuses with the best bike in the class. I’ll give it my all and then let’s see where I go. I would like to be on the podium consistently and regularly. I’m particularly looking forward to my home race in Spielberg. I gained my first experience on asphalt here in 2012, but haven’t been here since 2014. The facility is awesome and I’m really looking forward to this event. It would be perfect if I could win there. I am very motivated and have trained hard. I am also looking forward to work with my new teammates. Ilya is a very good rider and he has a very nice technique and I hope that with his help I can improve. I’m ready, the season can start.

Werner Daemen, Team Manager:
I am really happy with the team line-up for the 2021 season. I think that our chances of fighting for the title again with Ilya are very good. I am sure that Jan, our new addition to the team, and Pepijn, an old friend, will also be at the front for our team. Tim also showed last year that he can ride well and that he is carved from real racing wood. His injury set him back a bit last year, but he should have left that behind by now. Our riders may all feel at home in our team and get involved in the top fighting. If we all stay healthy, it will be a great season and I am sure that with our strong line-up we will be at the forefront. I’m happy for that.
