The long wait comes to an end. This weekend, from August 14th to 16th, the time has finally come for the International German Motorcycle Championship to start its long-awaited first round at the legendary TT Circuit in Assen, in the Netherlands.

For four whole months it was not exactly clear what the season would look like, whether there would be a championship in 2020 and how the newly imposed restrictions due to the corona pandemic can be implemented. But the organizers of the IDM went to great lengths to create at least a small championship with four events in two months. The EGS-alpha-Van Zon-BMW team and the entire IDM paddock are very grateful for this excellent work by the Motorpresse Stuttgart.

Unfortunately, as with many other motorsport events currently taking place around the world, spectators will not be admitted and the number of team members that can travel to the circuit is severely limited. But they also came up with a solution for this and so this year, with the help of the fantastic live stream of the TV production company Radio Viktoria, which was tested last season already, all races can be watched on the official website, the Facebook and YouTube channels of the series, streamed free of charge to everyone.

The Superbike 1000 class, with the riders of the EGS-alpha-Van Zon-BMW team, Ilya Mikhalchik (UKR) and Vladimir Leonov (RUS), will start on Sunday, August 16 at 12:50 p.m. and 4 p.m. . Tim Eby (GER), the third rider of the team, unfortunately cannot race in Assen due to an injury that he sustained during the test at the Hockenheimring at the end of July. It was only a small crash for Eby, but unfortunately he got stuck under the handlebars of his BMW S 1000 RR, injuring his little finger so badly that it later had to be partially surgically removed.

The team around IDM veteran Werner Daemen has fond memories of the traditional Dutch race track. Last season, Ilya Mikhalchik won his second IDM title in a row here and sealed the championship for the then Alpha Racing-Van Zon-BMW team.

Newcomer Vladimir Leonov also knows the track from his time in the 250cc / Moto2 World Championship and has no bad memories of it. His only concern is that the weather stays constant, then he too is toying with a podium finish.

The season opener of the IDM season 2020 begins for the EGS-alpha-Van Zon-BMW Team on August 14th at 11:00 a.m. with the first free practice session. It felt like an almost endless eternity, but now it’s finally starting again!

Ilya Mikhalchik, # 1:

“I feel great and I’m really looking forward to Assen. I like the track in all conditions. I don’t care if the sun is shining or if it’s raining. It’s been a long time since I’ve ridden real races on my bike and I can’t wait to finally get back to racing and do my job. I will try to enjoy every second and of course I will fight for victory. “

Tim Eby, # 17:

“I think it is the right decision to sit out at Assen. The risk of injuring myself again, or of tearing the wound open again, is simply too big. Maybe I could ride, but I don’t want to risk it to be completely fit for the rest of the season. At the moment I am still regularly at the doctor and physiotherapy, as I first have to learn how to move my finger properly again, but I am on the right way and very motivated to recover as quickly as possible. I’ve already started training at home again, ride my racing bike on roll and go jogging. I have also adjusted my diet more optimally to my fitness in order to be 100% physically ready. So I’m in good spirits that I’ll be back quickly. “

Vladimir Leonov, # 65:

“I’m really excited and can’t wait. I’ve been in Germany for almost a month now and I’m waiting for the start of the IDM season. This season is very important to me, not only because I can finally race again, but also because I want to know if I’m still fast enough. I hope the weather stays stable. I don’t care whether it’s raining or the sun is shining. I just don’t like it when the conditions are constantly changing. Of course I want to fight for a podium. I also have victory in the back of my mind, but so much can happen in racing. I wish that I can do a good job in Assen, it has been a long time since I rode here before, but I still remember the track very well. „

Werner Daemen, Team Manager:

“We are very happy that we can finally start with the IDM. The season is now very different from what we thought it would be, but at least we have a season. We have a few disadvantages in the team. Before the season we had planned tests in Spain, which then couldn’t take place. Our riders come from Ukraine and Russia, there were also travel restrictions and it took a long time for us to have them with us. So we weren’t able to test a lot, other teams did. That’s our disadvantage, but I still have a very good feeling for the season opener in Assen.

Unfortunately, Tim Eby had an accident during the last test at the Hockenheimring in which he lost his little finger. The accident itself wasn’t spectacular, but unfortunately it got stuck under the motorcycle and everything happened very quickly. He won’t be able to compete in Assen, but will be there and gather impressions. For the rest of the season, Tim will be back.

I expect Ilya and Vladimir to be able to fight at the top. We are the official BMW factory team and we have to fight for the championship. But in the end you never know what will happen. With just those few events on the calendar, a small mistake can cost you the entire season. We will see.“
